Tokyo is a double stub-end terminal for the Shinkansen lines that go into it. All trains from the northern lines and the southern lines terminate here, with no direct service through Tokyo. Any passengers who want to travel though Tokyo on the Shinkansen have to change trains here. Such passengers are apparently few enough in number that the lack of run-through service is not considered to be a problem. One of the reasons for the lack of run-through service is that the northern lines use a different power system than the southern lines, although with modern technology it is possible to build trains that can handle multiple power systems. I was short on time while I was shooting trains here, so I did not attempt to take down the train numbers and destinations. |
