  • Caption: View of the Bunker Hill Monument from the Charlestown Bridge. The monument is actually located on Breed's Hill, where the Battle of Bunker Hill took place. It was built between 1825 and 1842. The granite used in its construction came from Quincy. A short railway called the Granite Railway (first railroad in the USA, albeit horse-powered) was built in 1826 to haul the stone from the quarries to the Neponset River, where it was barged to Charlestown.
